John Lehmann from the Globe and Mail recently took a trip to Churchill to photograph the polar bears. At a remote lodge along the Seal River he was guided to some areas where polar bears tend to frequent in the summer. Patiently waiting for the bears to arrive he was able to get some incredible photographs of the bears as they bide time and wait for the ice season to arrive in November. While posting many polar bear images on the blog it still fascinates me when new perspectives of the animals are captured. These are some fresh shots of these stoic animals!

Natural Habitat Adventures guide Melissa Scott took this photo of two polar bears in Churchill’s Wildlife Management Area. In the heart of the season in November. Enjoy!

Wildlife researcher and photographer Brent Stephenson recorded these images in Baffin Island in the far north of Canada. An incredible day around Baffin where a pod of over 100 narwhals followed his vessel around. Even some male narwhals with tusks breaking the water’s surface appeared. Around ten polar bears throughout the day provided constant thrills and photo opportunities. Later a gyrfalcon made a kill in front of the bow viewed through binoculars. What a day in the high Arctic!

Another favorite polar bear photo from Churchill. Polar bears spar during the time leading up to their time out on the Hudson Bay sea ice as a means of staying fit and even as a mating display. These two have been at some aggressive grappling as the blood on one of the bears indicates. More sparring this season on the way!

Dennis Fast from Churchill captured these magnificent colorful polar bear shots in glowing fireweed. The unique photos were published by CBC News to highlight the way polar bears playfully interact with their surrounding environment. We view them most of the year in snowy settings, however with sea ice melting earlier in the Spring, polar bears are arriving on the coastal lowlands earlier and more often throughout the Arctic summer months.
