These boreal forest images with the glow of the receding sun in the background gives an aura and feel only the Arctic can provide. Trees in the north define the landscape in such a way we only can understand by experiencing the north firsthand. The cold air and snow on the ground and trees gives the eyes and mind a different perspective that the photos transcend. Churchill photographer Alex De Vries – Magnifico has refined his style to capture that distinct Arctic feel by continually searching for those subtle details of the region that make it unique in the world.

The highly anticipated northern lights season in Churchill is underway and off to a roaring start. Last night Natural Habitat Adventures guide Drew Hamilton and his group of travelers spent the evening out at Wapusk Adventures sled -dog yard with owner and musher Dave Daley. The area is set up nicely for an evening of aurora watching and photography.
Dave is an excellent educator on the history and care of the northern husky sled dogs. An evening with him conveying this and his love for his 40 plus dogs melded with the spectacular aurora borealis above is “enlightening”.to say the least.
These beautiful northern lights shots by Drew are just the start to what will hopefully eclipse the incredible season we had last year. Enjoy!

Foreground features in incredible images of northern lights can give the photo more depth and make the shot much more interesting to the eye. Scale is also brought into play when including such features as an inukshuk, trees, buildings or any other feature that makes it easier to believe these captivating aurora borealis are truly real and not photo – shopped. Below are two images of each, two with earthly features and two of solely northern lights in the sky. You decide which are more interesting to the eye and mind!
