Two awesome shots by Alex De Vries Magnifico from Churchill. The Hudson Bay Quest photo made the cover of Manitoba Tourism visitor guide. The image of Dave Daley, a race organizer and competitor, captures the essence of the race start. Sled dogs are born to run and these dogs are roaring to go.
The other shot of the Northern Pike coming through the ice hole is a fantastic view of fishing this time of year in the north! You can almost feel the grip of winter relinquishing its grip and acquiescing to the coming thaw of spring. Both depictions are truly northern sub -Arctic in their feel.

Natural Habitat Adventures guide Justin Gibson was busy keeping his avid travelers active this past week with various northern activities. With the frigid temperatures continuing in the north, if one doesn’t stay focused and active it can allow the mind to become obsessed with the cold. Mind over matter absolutely wins in these conditions. Coming from the northeast and living through so many long, cold winters, I have realized people everywhere allow themselves to complain about cold no matter what the thresh-hold is. The beauty of Churchill and the sub – Arctic can ease the mind from these stresses. The magical northern lights are a big incentive to stay positive in the far north!
These images from guide Justin Gibson really portray the harsh conditions that make the Arctic both endearing and forbidding in allure. Enjoy!

Churchill has four seasons that all seemingly blend into one. There are distinctions between the seasons, mostly temperature to a certain “degree” (see what I did there), as well as different wildlife viewing opportunities. Fantastic northern lights are more visible during the heart of winter though can be seen in fall and even summer with the right conditions. Beluga whales and certain migratory birds prevail only in summer although this past ‘fall’ the whales opted to stick around for awhile during the onset of polar bear season.
With all these amazing sights in Churchill there has been more overlapping of viewing possibilities over the past decade. Polar bears are arriving on land earlier and in greater numbers throughout the summer, a likely repercussion of global warming. This year in particular polar behavior has changed and we are seeing more scavenging in the form of seal – kills and other foraging on the tundra. Adaptation right before our eyes?
Whales, bears, birds, northern lights or beautiful tundra can be seen throughout the year in Churchill. Come see what this amazing region of the sub – Arctic can tantalize you with in any season!

These three photos from Alex De Vries – Magnifico in Churchill are fantastic cloud shots over the vast Hudson Bay. The colors in the fall are intense and highlight all the features of the sub – Arctic village. Polar bear season is within a week now so stay close for daily blog posts throughout the season. Should be continuous exciting news from Churchill!

In honor of Earth Day churchillpolarbears.org is requesting submissions of your favorite polar bear or other Arctic wildlife photos. You can post or share to Churchill Polar Bears Facebook page. In addition we request that you also include a short description of the photo as well as an idea for conserving energy as a means to fight global warming. We will publish them on the site over the coming months and give photographer credit for all images. The challenge is to raise global warming awareness and the affects on polar bears. What a great way to celebrate Earth Day and take a pledge to make this Earth year with stimulating ideas on how to protect the planet!
Here are some of our favorite images from Churchill celebrating the pristine wild of the sub- Arctic region!
